Kaolin — also known as "China Clay" — is a fine-grained, white, and soft clay mineral formed by the natural weathering of granite rocks over millions of years. This aluminosilicate, with the chemical formula Al₂Si₂O₅(OH)₄, mainly consists of the mineral kaolinite.
Named after the Kao-Ling hill in China where it was first mined in large quantities, kaolin has been one of the industrial milestones of human history since the discovery of porcelain. Today, its annual global production exceeds 40 million tons.
